It seems to me democracy has become a rather nasty word, and it has been a very long time since anyone talked about democracy and how to use it. It’s hard to see how we can even figure it all out. I read a book recently that was full of wisdom on the topic from a number of different perspectives. It was called Democracy for Dummies. It was an interesting read.
I don’t mean to downplay the fact that democracy is a pretty messed up way to run a country, but it does have its downsides. As the title of the book says, democracy is a good way to get things done in a less-than-ideal situation. When you are dealing with the masses or the majority, democracy is a bad strategy. It is a bit like the old joke about the way democracy works: it allows the majority to get things done.
Like democracy, democracy can work if the majority is more than 50% in power. In a democracy, the majority is not a majority but is really the majority in name only. To break down democracy, you can look to one of the most popular democracies, Switzerland. Switzerland is a democracy but its system is also a two-party system.
